Columbus Bosco Saskatoon

Columbus Bosco Homes was incorporated on May 16, 1989 as a non-profit society. The organization’s name has been updated to COLUMBUS BOSCO SASKATOON (2022). The reason for the name change is to more accurately reflect the services that are provided and where the organization is located.

Columbus Bosco Saskatoon, in partnership with Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, provides a Farm School Program for high school students and Family Learning Centres-Parent/Tot Program for pre-school children and their parents.

History
1989

Columbus Bosco Homes was incorporated as a nonprofit society.
1993

Chris Sarich, Superintendent of Student Services, Saskatoon Catholic Schools approached Joe Kammermeyer, Executive Director, Columbus Bosco Homes with the concept of starting a farm school program for “at risk” high school students. Joe and the Bosco board embraced the idea which resulted in the signing of a partnership between Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Columbus Bosco Homes. Chris and Joe immediately began the process of implementing the Farm School Program.

Columbus Bosco purchased 80 acres of riverfront property with all the facilities needed to operate the school. The school opened in September 1993 with 20 students, two teachers and two teacher assistants provided by Saskatoon Catholic Schools. The Farm School Program offered academic and life skills programs and involved the students caring for the grounds and animals.
1995

The Family Learning Program initiated by Elaine Zakreski, Early Childhood Consultant, Saskatoon Catholic Schools opened with one centre at St. John School. This partnership with Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Columbus Bosco involved the School Division providing the facilities and Columbus Bosco providing the necessary staff. The Family Learning Centres, by 2019, expanded to all quadrants of the city offering parent education and supervised activities for preschool aged children.

2011

Joe Kammermeyer, Executive Director of Columbus Bosco Homes passed away.
2022

Columbus Bosco Homes updated it’s name to Columbus Bosco Saskatoon.
